The 1653 Wednesday Demonstration (June 19, International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict)

On June 19, International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, the 1653 Wednesday Demonstration was held. The demonstration was organized by the Korean Council and hosted by Solidarity for Gijichon Human Rights. In 2015, the UN Security Council declared June 19 as the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict and called on the world to implement Resolution 1820, which prohibits the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war. The Korean Council is against all forms of violence against women and wartime sexual violence around the world.

During the Wednesday Demonstration, the Korean Council announced the installation of the Statue of Peace in Stintino city, Sardegna, Italy. It is the 2nd statue installed in public space; the 1st is in Berlin, Germany. Including the statue in Berlin, the Japanese government actively disrupt the installation of the statue. However, the Korean Council and the citizens of Korea emphasize that the meaning of the statue is not only commemorating the victims but also a symbol of peace without war and sexual violence against women.
