[Press Conference] Emergency Action Submits an Amicus Curiae Brief to the Constitutional Court Calling for Impeachment

The impeachment trial against President Yoon Suk-yeol concluded on February 25 with the closing arguments from both the petitioner and the respondent. In the aftermath, on February 26, Emergency Action held a press conference to brief the public on the trial's outcome, its implications, and the future steps of their campaign for Yoon's removal. During the conference, an amicus curiae brief was submitted to the Constitutional Court, asserting that Yoon’s acts of insurrection, including his declaration of emergency martial law, are unconstitutional and warrant his immediate removal from office.

The Emergency Action, co-chaired by Lee Na-young, Chairperson of the Korean Council, highlighted the gravity of Yoon's actions. They pointed out that his declaration of emergency martial law and other insurrectionary acts violated the Constitution and the Martial Law Act and undermined the very principles of constitutional democracy. These actions, they argued, violated citizens' fundamental human rights and denied the supremacy of the Constitution, which forms the foundation of South Korea's democratic order.

The Emergency Action emphasized the need for Yoon’s immediate removal from office, viewing it as necessary to protect the Constitution and uphold democratic integrity. The group called upon the Constitutional Court to fulfill its responsibility to correct the injustices caused by these violations, urging the Court to unanimously dismiss Yoon for his clear breach of the Constitution. They warned that if the judiciary sides with those in power, South Korea risks repeating the painful history of human rights abuses from the past.
