
On June 13, the Korean Council participated in and co-hosted a talk concert organized by the Gangdong-Gu(Gangdong District) Statue of Peace Preservation Committee to express solidarity and support. On August 14, 2019, approximately 1,000 citizens of Gangdong District in Seoul raised approximately 53 million KRW (approximately $ 40,000 USD) to establish the Statue of Peace. This year marks the sixth anniversary of its establishment.

Following a performance by singer Lee Ji-sang, Na-Young Lee, the Chair of the Korean Council, delivered a talk. In her remarks, she explained how Statues of Peace were established in various local communities and criticized the previous government’s inadequate response to ongoing attacks by far-right historical revisionists. She also emphasized that the issue of the Japanese military sexual slavery and the human rights violations faced by U.S. military camp town women are interconnected, sharing a common root in gender-based sexual violence and discrimination.
