[Press Conference] Stop the Demolition of Dongducheon's Old STD Management Center, UN Official Letter Released

 On January 21, at the National Assembly Communication Center press conference, The Korean Council, as the Joint Countermeasure Committee to Prevent Demolition of Donducheon's Old STD Management Center (Dongducheon Joint Committee), held a press conference. The conference titled “The government must urgently take steps to preserve historical memories, records, and records! Gyeonggi-do must stop the demolition of Dongducheon's old STD management center, UN official letter released press conference."

In September 2024, a victim of the Kijichon, U.S military "comfort women," Dongducheon Joint Committee, the Lawyers for a Democratic Society, and others submitted an urgent letter to the Special Rapporteur of the UN Human Rights Council, stating that the removal of the center. 

Recognizing the seriousness and urgency of the situation, the Special Rapporteurs sent the “Joint Letter of Concern” to the South Korean government exceptionally quickly. The letter, sent on November 15, 2024, was released after a 60-day confidentiality period. It also revealed that the government had formally responded to the letter.

In response, the Dongducheon Joint Committee and the International Human Rights Network explained the legal and social implications of the letter. They pointed out that the center's demolition is unjust from the perspective of the victim's rights and international human rights standards. Lee Jeong, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, co-hosted the press conference.
