[November Visit] Halmoni  in Pohang

On November 12, activists Hang, and Dol visited Park Pil-guen halmoni in Pohang. As soon as arriving at her house, she welcomed us gladly. We went to eat lunch, Godee soup. She liked the seasoned fish cakes; she ate the whole bowl. Dol never tried the Godee soup and bean leaves seasoned with Sancho (known as Sichuan pepper), a unique dish of Gyeongsang-do (Southern part of Korea, including Pohang).

After lunch, we stopped by a market to buy things for her. She said, "Who else would buy me this but Chung Dae-hyup (she's referring to Hang. She knows Hang's name as Chung Dae-hyup, which is a shortened name of the Korean Council for the Women Drafted for Military Sexual Slavery by Japan in Korean)." Hang asked her if she liked the vest we had given her the last time. She said she liked it and wore it every day, and we were happy to see that. Then she gave a huge bag of chestnuts to Hang. She also added that Hang is just like her daughter. It was a love of halmoni to activists.

We asked her to play Hwatu (a traditional Korean card game) since she enjoyed it. However, she was so experienced that she won every game except for one, as if she had some mysterious power. There was a reason why she was rushing Dol to play faster. Seeing her smiling brightly every time she won, Dol felt good but wanted to win her badly. The time flies while playing the card.

Halmoni asked activists to sleep over, but she also told us to be on time because we had to go back. She gave us some energy drinks and yogurt, regretting that she couldn't give us more. Next time, we'll visit earlier, halmoni. See you again!
