On September 28, 2020, the Korean Council, together with global citizens including the Korea Verband in Germany, installed a Statue of Peace in Mitte, Berlin, expressing a shared desire for justice and peace.
Statue of Peace shows a courage of survivors who broke their long silence and transformed from victims into human rights activists. It stands as a universal symbol of women's rights, calling attention to the ongoing issue of wartime sexual violence around the world. It represents a global commitment to ensuring that such a tragic history is never repeated.
However, Japan continues to pursue efforts to remove the Statue of Peace. On April 28, 2022, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida officially demanded the removal of the Statue of Peace during a summit with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Subsequently, on May 2024, Kai Wegner, the Mayor of Berlin, who visited Japan, discussed the issue with Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshiko Kawakami, stating that "unilateral expressions must cease" and suggested a possible solution to the controversial Berlin Statue of Peace issue, indicating the possibility of its removal. On July 19, Remlinger, the Head of the Mitte District Office, informed Nataly Han, the representative of the Korea Verband in Germany, that if the Statue of Peace is not removed by September 28, the Korea Verband will face repeated fines until the Statue of Peace is relocated.
Please join us in protecting the Statue of Peace from the threat of removal by the Japanese government, which tries to erase history! Let us unite our efforts to ensure the permanent installation of the Statue of Peace, and prevent the City of Berlin and the Mitte District Office from removing it.
