The Joint Action to Rectify the National Human Rights Commission of Korea and the South Korean Coalition for Anti-discrimination Legislation (the Korean Council is participating in both coalitions) have confirmed that Ahn Chang-ho is an inappropriate candidate unable to fulfill the duties of the Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission. They held a press conference calling on the National Assembly and the President to take action, including the withdrawal of his nomination.
Korean civil society, having observed the confirmation listening to Ahn Chang-ho, the nominee for the Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission, held at the National Assembly’s Steering Committee on September 3, is deeply concerned about his alarming lack of awareness on human rights as well as the various suspicions raised, casting doubt on his qualifications as a public official. Given the already deteriorating situation at the National Human Rights Commission, marred by the anti-human rights and unreasonable actions of standing commissioners Lee Choong-sang and Kim Yong-won, it was clear from the hearing that if Ahn Chang-ho were appointed as Chairperson, the Commission's condition could worsen significantly. Ahn Chang-ho must immediately withdraw his candidacy.
