September is the month of halmoni’s birthday in Pohang, Gyeongsangnam-do. We visited halmoni to celebrate her birthday. She said that she had been waiting for us, worrying from early morning as the rain was pouring heavily. We handed her the birthday present we had prepared, and read a birthday letter to her:

"Halmoni, happy birthday! Please stay healthy, and let’s continue to create many memorable moments together! We love you ❤“

The activists suggested trying special meal, but halmoni insisted that her favourite dish, “Goditang.” Watching halmoni finish her meal with such a hearty appetite made us feel full, too.

On the way back home, we stopped by the supermarket to do some grocery shopping. We held halmoni's hand and walked around the supermarket, describing each item to her. We filled the cart with the essentials such as rice and sugar, and when she worried whether we have enough money to buy everything.

When we returned to her home, halmoni offered us grapes and some yogurt to take with us to Seoul. We had to kindly refuse, explaining that it would be too heavy to carry, and insisted she enjoy it herself.

Halmoni’s yard is filled with beautiful flowers and cactus pots. They all looked healthy, basking in the sunlight. Beside her house, there’s a clear stream flowing, making it a lovely place. As she talked about how lonely she often feels, I imagined her sitting quietly alone. Even after the car started leaving her home, we could see her waving at us, saying, “Come back if you miss me. The three of you must come together next time.” Her words still echo vividly in my ears.
