
As the Korea–Japan summit is taking place on January 13, civil organizations held a press conference on January 12 in front of the Blue House. The press conference in advance of the summit, titled "Condemn Prime Minister Takaichi over Absurd Statement of Dokdo and Denial of War Crimes! We Demand the Lee Administration Take Action for Historical Justice · Peace· Sovereignty!" was held by the Civil Solidarity for Historical Justice and Peaceful Relationship between Korea and Japan and the Korean Peace Solidarity for Sovereignty and Reunification, which the Korean Council participating.

Prime Minister of Japan Takaichi has been accelerating policies that push Japan toward becoming a more overtly aggressive state. These include the denial of Japan’s history of war crimes, repeated infringements on Korea’s sovereignty over Dokdo, plans for military intervention in the event of a Taiwan contingency, revisions to provisions prohibiting the introduction of nuclear weapons, and the expansion of preemptive strike capabilities.

Through the press conference, participants condemned the Takaichi administration’s regressive historical perspective and its incitement of war, warning that the upcoming summit must not, under the pretext of so-called “shuttle diplomacy,” become a platform that tolerates Japan’s denial of its past or the revival of militarism.

They emphasized that President Lee Jae-myung must make it unequivocally clear, in front of Prime Minister Takaichi, that no future-oriented relationship can be established without Japan’s acknowledgment of its wars of aggression and war crimes, accompanied by an official apology.
