On April 18, the Korean Council participated in the Peace and Culture Festival to Stop the Demolition of the Dongducheon Old STD Management Center, held at Jihaeng Station. The STD Management Center was a place where women referred to as U.S. military “comfort women” were forcibly confined under the pretext of STD control and treatment. Countless women were forcibly detained there and injected with massive amounts of penicillin, remaining illegally confined until they were declared fully treated. These STD management centers, sites of state crime, have now all disappeared, with only one remaining in Dongducheon.
At the Peace and Culture Festival, participants came together in the hope that the center would be preserved, listening to various songs, dances, and poetry readings, and concluded the event with a march. The Korean Council will continue to do its utmost to ensure that victims of state violence recover justice and that these memories are preserved as records so to prevent recurrence.
