On May 7, Han Kyong-hee, Chair of the Korean Council, participated in the “Statement by Various Sectors on the Occasion of the Korea-Japan Foreign and Defense Ministers’ 2+2 Meeting,” held in front of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

At the press conference, 220 civil society organizations, including the Civil Solidarity for Historical Justice and Peaceful Relationship between Korea and Japan and the Solidarity for Independent Reunification and Peace, condemned the Japanese government for denying historical justice and scheming to revive militarism. They also urged the Korean government to halt its push for the Korea-Japan Acquisition and Cross-Servicing Agreement (ACSA), which would effectively lead to a Korea-Japan military alliance.

In her remarks, Chair Han asked, “On what basis of trust can we strengthen military cooperation with Japan, when it continues to disregard even the cries of victims of Japanese military sexual slavery, seeks to remove the Statue of Peace, and attempts to erase the history of its war of aggression?” She warned, “Rearmament without reflection or responsibility will only heighten further threats and military tensions.”
