On May 15, the 49th-day memorial rite for Kang Il-chul halmoni was held at Daeungjeon Hall of Jogyesa Temple. Activists from the Korean Council attended the rite with heartfelt wishes for halmoni to rest in peace.
The rite was presided over by Venerable Seon-il, Director of the Social Affairs Bureau of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. The ceremony proceeded in the following order: memorial bell-ringing, the ritual of inviting and bathing the spirit, Buddhist offerings at the altar, a memorial Dharma talk, the Gwaneum feeding ritual, farewell ritual, a video on the life and footsteps of halmoni, floral tribute, memorial addresses, a memorial song by the Jogyesa Choir, remarks by the bereaved family and Venerable Seyeong, Executive Director of the House of Sharing, and the ritual burning of written prayers.
In a memorial Dharma talk read on his behalf by Venerable Jinseong, Director of the Social Affairs Department, Venerable Jinwoo, President of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, paid tribute to Kang Il-chul halmoni, saying that her “lion’s roar of history” still remains in our hearts. He also stated, “The task of securing an apology and reparations from the Japanese government now rests with us who remain.”
Remembering Kang Il-chul halmoni, activists from the Korean Council renewed their commitment to continue working even harder toward the resolution of the Japanese military sexual slavery issue. We will remember her and continue our work with even greater dedication toward the war-free world she longed for.
