On May 18, a press conference was held at Gwanghwamun Square ahead of the Korea-Japan Summit, hosted by the Civil Solidarity for Historical Justice and Peaceful Relationship between Korea and Japan and Korean Peace Solidarity for Sovereignty and Reunification. The Korean Council participated in the press conference as a member organization of the Civil Solidarity for Historical Justice and Peaceful Relationship between Korea and Japan.
Participants strongly condemned the Takaichi administration in Japan for its historical distortion and moves toward becoming a military power, and called for an end to the expansion of Korea-Japan and Korea-U.S.-Japan military cooperation. They also strongly urged the Korean government to immediately halt the pursuit of the Korea-Japan Acquisition and Cross-Servicing Agreement (ACSA) and the Reciprocal Access Agreement (RAA), which could serve as a pretext for the Self-Defense Forces’ entry onto the Korean Peninsula, and to pursue the restoration of historical justice and dignified diplomacy toward Japan.
In her remarks, Han Kyong-hee, Chairperson of the Korean Council, pointed out that Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party had recently discussed stepping up efforts to remove Statues of Peace overseas. She criticized Japan, saying, “A country that is absorbed in erasing history without reflecting on its war crimes is seeking to rearm itself and strengthen its military hegemony in East Asia.”
A press conference condemning the Korea-Japan Summit is also scheduled to be held at 11 a.m. on May 19, just before the summit, in front of the East Gate of the Gyeongbuk Provincial Government Office in Andong. We ask for your interest and support.
