On July 1, a press conference, “1,203 Citizens’ Declaration for Democratic Citizenship Education and the Abolition of the National Security Act,” was held at 11 a.m. on the steps of the National Assembly.
For the past 77 years, the National Security Act has distorted the history of Korea’s independence and democratization movements, threatened peace on the Korean Peninsula, and suppressed the freedom of thought and expression by restricting the press, education, research, and democratic citizenship education.
The event was organized by the Citizens’ Coalition for the Abolition of Article 7 of the National Security Act and Korean Peace Solidarity for Sovereignty and Reunification, together with 105 civic and social organizations. The Korean Council also joined the press conference, with the Chair Lee Na-young standing alongside fellow civic leaders to reaffirm the legitimacy of abolishing the National Security Act. Participants further pledged to advance the cause through concrete actions, including a legislative petition.
