This December 28 is 10 years since the 2015 Korea–Japan Agreement, an agreement that has served as a major obstacle to justice for survivors of the Japanese military sexual slavery system.
On December 24 at 10:30 a.m., the Korean Council for Justice and Remembrance, together with the Civil Solidarity for Historical Justice and Peaceful Relationship between Korea and Japan and the Joint Countermeasures Committee Against Far-Right Attacks on the Statue of Peace, held a press conference in front of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the Government Complex Seoul.
At the press conference, participants strongly urged the Lee Jae-myung administration not to repeat the grave mistakes of the previous Yoon Suk-yeol government, which acted as a spokesperson for the Japanese government by repeatedly asserting that the agreement was an “official agreement,” despite survivors’ clear rejection of it.
Speakers emphasized that the '2015 Korea–Japan Agreement' has not resolved the issue of the Japanese military sexual slavery, but has instead functioned as a barrier to justice, accountability, and victims’ rights. They called for the full nullification of the 2015 agreement, the strict punishment of far-right groups that attack and terrorize the Statue of Peace, and proactive efforts to amend the Act on the Protection, Support, and Commemoration of Victims of Japanese Military Sexual Slavery.
