A press conference condemning the visit of Japan’s Foreign Minister, Takeshi Iwaya, was held on January 13. The press conference participants also denounced the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which engaged in pro-Japan, humiliating diplomacy with Yoon Suk-yeol. Takeshi Iwaya should do nothing and leave immediately. The lawsuits regarding forced labor and the Japanese military sexual slavery remain valid, and the participants have declared their commitment to restoring historical justice beyond Yoon Suk-yeol’s administration.
The year 2025 marks 120 years since the Protectorate Treaty(Treaty of 1905), 60 years since the 1965 Korea-Japan Agreement on Settlement of Claims from the Perspective of International Law, and the 80th anniversary of liberation. Citizens of Japan and Korea have raised their voices to unite and reconstruct a peaceful Korea-Japan relationship.
Lee Na-Young, the chairperson of the Korean Council, strongly condemned the South Korean government for upholding the humiliating 2015 Korea-Japan Agreement and the Japanese government for its ongoing erasure of historical justice. She called for an immediate legal apology and truth investigation for the victims of the Japanese military sexual slavery.
The year 2025 will be crucial. The Korean Council will closely monitor the implementation of the victorious court judgment secured by the survivors in November 2023 and take the lead in restoring historical justice.
