[January Visit] Halmoni in Gyeonggi-do

On January 9, activists Haeng and Dodam from the Korean Council activists visited a halmoni living in Gyeonggi-do.

The long and cold winter is especially difficult for halmonis. Since last winter, the halmoni’s health has declined. She has been unable to go on her usual gateways and has had little appetite, making her appear even weaker.

Yet, upon hearing that the activists had come to visit, she sits up and greets us. “You must have had a hard time traveling all this way. Did it take long to get here?” she asked, showing concern for activists. She insisted activists eat the snacks she had prepared, watching closely to make sure activists were eating enough. The activists know well that seeing us eat brings her joy.

Halmoni awares that the Korean Council office is in Mapo, reminisced, “When I was young, I used to meet my friends and have fun in Mapo.” Her eyes held a longing for the past as she encouraged the activists to explore the world and do everything they wish while they are still young.

Hoping that she would regain her health and join the activists for a gateway once spring arrives, the activists said, “Halmoni, you must recover soon and come visit our office!” To which she smiled and replied, “Yes, I’ll get better and go to Mapo!” The desire to spend more time with her grew stronger in that moment.

As always, before the activists left, halmoni handed them a box of vitamin drinks—a small but heartfelt gift filled with love. The drinks, given with care, always provide strength to the activists. Activist Dodam thought to herself, Next time, we will bring our love and energy to share with halmoni.

Halmoni, may you stay healthy for a long, long time.
