[Solidarity Statement] Filipino women and South Korean peoples link arms in fight against return of martial rule

Filipino women and South Korean peoples
link arms in fight against return of martial rule

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino women's alliance GABRIELA stands in unwavering solidarity with the South Korean people as they resist attempts to revive authoritarian rule under the guise of martial law. As a women's organization deeply rooted in the struggles for democracy and justice, we resonate with your fight against oppression and militarization, which threaten hard-won freedoms and civil liberties.

The shadow of martial law evokes painful memories for the Filipino people, who endured the brutality of Ferdinand Marcos’ dictatorship. Under his regime, widespread human rights violations, economic exploitation, and the silencing of dissent defined the nation’s dark chapter. More than 50 years later and we continue to face new forms of tyranny and violent repression under the rule of the dictator's son. We recognize the echoes of this repression in the current challenges South Korea faces and the courageous resistance of its people.

GABRIELA emphasizes the crucial role of women in this struggle. Authoritarian regimes disproportionately harm women through systemic violence, economic marginalization, and attacks on gender rights. South Korean women have historically been at the forefront of democratic movements—from labor strikes to protests against gender-based violence, and their leadership is vital in resisting the return of martial rule.

We call on all democratic forces globally to denounce the creeping rise of authoritarianism in South Korea and elsewhere. Let this be a moment to reaffirm our collective commitment to justice, equality, and people's democratic rights.

To the South Korean people, your struggle inspires us. Together, we declare: never again to martial rule! Never again to tyranny! Let us continue to fight for a future rooted in genuine freedom and social justice
