[Butterfly Fund] 2024 Human Rights Report on the Trafficking of Rohingya Women and Girls

On December 23, 2024,  2024 Human Rights Report on the Trafficking of Rohingya Women and Girls, supported by the Butterfly Fund, “Rohingya Women on a Journey of Death and Exploitation,” was released in both Korean and English. It is the first report by a domestic organization to reveal the situation of Rohingya human rights victims through actual cases of women and girls being trafficked. The report was jointly produced by ADI and the local Rohingya Human Rights Center (RHRC) with the support of the Korean Council for Justice and Remembrance for the Issues of Military Sexual Slavery by Japan, the Gwangju Human Rights Peace Foundation, and the Sun Pro Bono Center.

Since 2024, through ADI, the Korean Council has been supporting the Rohingya refugee human rights documentation and international advocacy project in Cox's Bazar camp in Bangladesh with the Butterfly Fund. The Rohingya Human Rights Center, the co-producer of this report, is a local human rights organization co-founded in 2021 by Adi and Rohingya field activists to document the conflict and human rights abuses of the Rohingya.

More than one million Rohingya refugees have fled genocide by the Myanmar military and are living in the Cox's Bazar refugee camp in Bangladesh. The Bangladeshi government restricts refugees' right to work, reside, educate, assemble, and be safe in the camps. The recent deterioration of conditions in the camps, the rise of organized crime, and the high level of socio-economic vulnerability of women and girls make protection measures particularly urgent.

This report features testimonies from 18 survivors, an in-depth interview with one trafficking organization member, 779 survey results, and recommendations for the international community. It is an in-depth fact-finding report rather than a short article or media report that builds the evidence base for the advocacy movement.

In 2025, the Korean Council will continue to support the human rights advocacy activity of Rohingya women and children through the Butterfly Fund, remembering the effort and courage of Japanese military “comfort women” survivors to record their testimonies. We ask for your support and donation to the Butterfly Fund so that we can continue to investigate the human rights situation of the Rohingya.
